Essay On A Labour Day Essay On Dignity Of Labour

Essay On A Labour Day Essay On Dignity Of Labour

Once a leader was much grieved to see the stark poverty and unemployment in Pakistan but he attributed it to negligence and ignorance. He said "we do not know the dignity of labour as such". In other words a shoesmaker will not do any thing beyond makingthe shoes, he will think that other types of labour is below hig dignity. The leader felt that there was enough employment in Pakistan for all who would work their hands and feet honestly.

He believed that God has given everyone the capacity to work and earn more than his daily need and whoever is ready to use that capacity is sure to find work. No labour is mean for one who wants to earn an honest penny. The only thing is the readiness to use the hands and feet that God has given.

Labour is essential for man. A millionaire cannot pull on for long if he rolls in his bed all the day long and is even helped to his food. He therefore induces hunger by exercise. This type of exercise is not necessary for a farmer because his muscles work when he tills the soil. More than 9/10 of the humanity lives by tilling the soil and perhaps they are happier, healthier and more peaceful than others.

When labour is so necessary why should a person hate labour. It is foolishness to condemn the labouring class simply because it does some work and perhaps others may not be doing. This invidious distinction of rank would be abolished if there is dignity of labour.

Dignity of labour is necessary for a country like Pakistan. Here people, so called richer sections of the society imitate the colonial rulers and think that they should distinguish themselves from the labouring class by showing themselves to be rich and threat the labouring class comparatively lower section of the society. These types of false distinctions in our society have resulted in maladjustments.

This had led to the evils like that of bond labour and exploitation. This relation between some and the other people in the society can never be conducive to a democratic spirit. In fact democracy cannot work properly if there is any type of distinction in the society.

Dignity of labour means not only that everyone should take pride in doing manual work, it also means that the labouring class should not be considered to be inferior. That is why it has been suggested that labouring class should not be forced to labour for others. They should he provided ample facilities for working.

They should be given facilities for leading a good life. It totally depends upon the policies of the government how far the labouring class is exploited. Apart from this everyone should have the right to work
and if some security against implementation is provided perhaps it will become possible for the labourers to feel quite dignified.

After getting independence Pakistan has been making an all- out effort to ameliorate the working conditions of the labouring class. The Shop. Act and the Factory Acts contain some provision which are directly concerned with the working of the labourers. They are given medical facilities, a prescribed number of holidays and Provident fund etc. Still much is lacking. The status of the labourers has not been raised. He is still considered to be just a mean fellow, or at least a needy fellow who can easily be exploited in one
or the other way.

The attitude of the people can be changed if all people are made to work for themselves. Till they get labourers for doing jobs is not possible to change their attitude towards the labouring class. Moreover the government even in the case of factories should not make nay distinction between the labourers and the officers. Labourers should also be given some participation in the case of factories.

But we have not been implementing definite policies which may improve the living conditions of the labourers. Yet dignity of labour cannot be recognised and without this recognition it is not possible for man to make progress in any field. False distinctions whether social or other wide do a great harm to the dignity of man. Pakistan is primarily a country of labourers and we should recognise the dignity of labour.
